As a famous baseball player said, “When there’s a fork in the road, take it!” After some soul searching, I was fortunate enough to wade into the tech sector despite having no background of any kind. A vague interest and understanding were all I had. A clear idea, a spirit fueled by energy (Redbull?) and curiosity were my tools. Here are a few of the impacts and major changes I observed and loved:

Shift from a 9 to 5 routine to an accomplishment-based planning.

I mean, in enterprise business, and more specifically in the tech industry your days may never end. I’m sure we could work 24/7 and still find something to do. This gives you incredible autonomy and feeling of empowerment. No day is the same and your plate is always full. If you’re hungry this might be the right spot for you.

An incredible sense of achievement

while helping mass retail people in the banking industry, I had the feeling that I could only touch people on a surface and not have the changes I hoped for them. In enterprise business, you can have many impacts: operational, people, financial.

B2B vs B2C

While working in the retail industry, you work for an enterprise and your customers might be a thousand people. Retail can become quickly overwhelming if you are not able to set limits. This was an aspect of the job I did not exactly love.

Sales in large corporate

Regarding the segment you’ll be working in, you might work with 1, 3, 30, 333+ clients (companies) and in each you might need to engage with 15+people. Still a lot of human beings to deal with, though. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is great. The fact is that being in a B2B environment / enterprise provides both you and your customers a common thread that leads to collaboration, a sort of greater good where you can help both the person and their employer. You build a personal relationship with your stakeholders by building value around identified objectives/pains considering the best outcome possible for that same company. And all of this happens in a competitive environment: teamwork, excitement, pressure. I don’t know about you but If you ever played sports competitively, this is the place to be!

Tech industry

As mentioned earlier, I discovered the B2B or Enterprise to Enterprise business through the Tech industry. What I love about this, is that you keep on learning. Technologies move, evolve, adapt and so do you. Technologies impact each other companies, even on themselves (think about MySpace, MSN, Kodak). The one thing to remember here is basically transformation. How as a sales, you can both provoke it and help an other company and at the same time be impacted yourself. Exactly like the kids in that serie, Cobra Kai (apologies for that reference 😉 ), “don’t stand still or you’ll get stuck in the cement.
